ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As the government shutdown continues with no end in sight, local groups are raising concerns about hunger and food assistance programs. Advocates gathered at Saint Peter’s Kitchen on Brown Street in Rochester, demanding the Trump administration reverse cuts made to SNAP this year.

They criticized the administration’s decision to not fund SNAP benefits in November if the shutdown persisted.

Saint Peter’s Kitchen serves more than 400 meals every day but worried it might not be able to meet the increasing demand.

“The emergency food pantry network in town are asked to do always more with empty shelves, do more with less. That’s just not possible without a partner in the federal government restoring sanity to food policy,” said Children’s Agenda CEO Larry Max.

According to a May report from Feeding America, 12.8% of people in the region were food insecure in 2023, amounting to nearly 161,000 people.
